The International Order of St. Luke the Physician
Healing Ministry
Region IX

They devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and to the fellowship,
to the breaking of bread and to prayer.
Everyone was filled with awe, and many wonders and miraculous signs were done by the apostles.
All the believers were together and had everything in common.
Selling their possessions and goods, they gave to anyone as he had need.
Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts.
They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts,
praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people.
And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.

Who we are - 2002

We are a group of Christians from various denominational backgrounds, who feel called to the ministry of healing. A few of us are involved in pastoral care; several of us are involved in interdenominational work; some of us are involved in equipping our own churches for the healing ministry; all of us are involved in personal ministry.

This is a new call for some of us.

All of us are seeking God's Will for our lives.

We are all in the process of studying the Initial Study Project for Associate Members of The International Order of St. Luke the Physician, entitled: THE HEALING MINISTRY OF JESUS.

On February 11th 2003, eight of us were inducted as Associate Members of the Order of St. Luke the Physician. One member was not able to attend and will be inducted at a future date. The service was performed by The Reverend Canon Barry Clarke, Chaplain of the West Island Chapter of the Order of St. Luke.

Our first bible study group members have now completed their study, and are in the process of reading their 3 required book titles. In September, it is hoped that members will undertake to study the new curriculum that has been prepared for the Order of St. Luke, called Digging Deeper.

On April 29th 2003, a second group of Christians came together to study the OSL's bible study project, The Healing Ministry of Jesus Christ. We meet every second Tuesday morning. In the Fall, a second Induction service will be planned. At that time, the members of this study group will be presented for Induction as Associate Members. Joining them to be inducted as Full Members of the Order of St. Luke, will be those of us who have completed the bible study project, and who have read 3 of the required book titles on our OSL Required Reading List.

As is written on the front cover of the study project material:

Life's Greatest Adventure Awaits You When
Jesus Christ Becomes Your Leader -
Light - King - Law and Savior (Healer)

Indeed.

Where we are now 2002

On September 16th, 2002, a small group of us came together for the first time for an evening of prayer and study. It was a peaceful and enjoyable time.

We have decided to come together every 3rd Monday monthly for an evening of prayer and study.

During our study time, we will be using the Initial Study Project for Associate Members in the Order of St. Luke the Physician.

During our prayer time, we will be praying:
for wisdom and discernment for each of us,
                                                 for personal concerns,
for the formation of the Chapter,
for the Lord to raise up a Chaplain for us.

Ours is simply to come before Him. He will do the rest.

To the faithful you show yourself faithful.
Psalm 18:25a

Where we feel called to be - 2003

Having been a member of The Order of St. Luke the Physician for over ten years, I now feel called to start a new Chapter for the Montreal area.

Eighteen months ago, I began to encourage a group of Christians from various denominations to undertake the Initial Study Project of the International Order of St. Luke the Physician, with the goal in mind of forming in the coming year, a new Chapter of The Order of St. Luke for the Montreal area.

The project is composed of 26 modules & takes 6 months to complete.

I am presently leading a second group of Christians through the OSL's Initial Bible Study Project, called The Healing Ministry of Jesus; our first study group members have completed their study.

Alongside this track of Christians who are preparing for the ministry, another small group has been meeting monthly since September 2002, to pray about the formation of the Chapter. It is to this group that the Lord will bring to mind who our Chaplain will be. This will be discerned in the Lord's good time.

These are the Long-term & Short-term objectives that I envision for The Montreal Chapter of The Order of St. Luke the Physician:

That we use the 6 month Order of St. Luke Initial Study Project as a means of preparing and equipping members for Healing Teams
That the newly formed Order of St. Luke Chapter meets monthly for the purpose of prayer, study, fellowship, planning, support, accountability, and growth
That each OSL Chapter member take advantage of The Order of St. Luke teaching resources
That we help and encourage other denominational Chapter members to introduce the ministry of healing to their own churches
That we move beyond the walls of the church into hospitals, nursing facilities, and homes of shut-ins to minister the healing touch of Jesus
That we offer to the surrounding communities, regularly scheduled monthly Healing Services
That we offer to the surrounding communities, occasional OSL Missions on prayer and healing

This is the overall vision, and these are the goals and objectives that I have in mind. I do believe the Lord is equipping us for a future work. We will take one step at a time. God will do the rest.

By faith Abraham, when called to go to a place he would later receive as his inheritance
obeyed and went,
even though he did not know where he was going.
Hebrews 11:8

The Present - 2014

In May of 2005, my husband and I began our journey into full communion with the Roman Catholic Church. Our story is documented on the home page of Life and Doctrine (see Home below).

In June of 2005, I met with the Steering Committee of Catholic Charismatic Services of Montreal, a committee formed for the revival of the healing ministry in the Roman Catholic Diocese of Montreal. In July of 2005, I joined the committee and took on the responsibility of training for anyone feeling called to the ministry of healing.

A number of groups have since completed the Initial Bible Study Project of the Order of St. Luke. As training is ongoing, Father Tom Dowd (now Auxiliary Bishop Thomas Dowd), Liaison for the Diocese for the revival of the healing ministry, has selected the Francis MacNutt Christian Healing Ministries DVD series - School of Healing Prayer Level I - as followup to our OSL Bible Study Training. We call it our "Year Two" Training. Two groups have completed Level One, as well as Level Two.

(Before moving on to Level Three...)

We are presently using the DVD series called, Living the Discerning Life, The Spiritual Teaching of St. Ignatius of Loyola, with Father Timothy Gallagher OMV, as well as the CD series, also by Father Gallagher OMV, entitled, Spiritual Consolation, St. Ignatius of Loyola's Guide for the greater discernment of spirits.

In 2006, I felt called to put in place a Healing Ministry at the bilingual (English; French) Parish of Saint Luke (yes, that's right). We offer the OSL Bible study in French as well as in English.

Prayer teams are available following English and French Masses every first Sunday monthly, and a bilingual Eucharist, with prayers for healing and the Sacraments of Reconciliation & Anointing of the Sick, is offered every second Tuesday evening monthly. We have also put in place a bilingual Telephone Prayer Chain, which quite actively receives prayer, and praise, requests from parishioners.

In 2012, Father Francis McKee of Jesus Light of the World, our home parish, invited me to organize prayer teams for a monthly Mass with prayers for healing and the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick.

On the Saturday morning following our first Friday all night Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, there is a Eucharistic Celebration; The Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick is offered, as well as Prayer Team ministry.

It is my hope and prayer that sometime in the near future, a third West Island parish will also be offering as well, a regularly scheduled monthly mass with the Anointing of the Sick, as well as Prayer Team ministry. In the meantime, we trust in the Lord to raise up ministers of healing for this work.

Through Catholic Charismatice Services of Montreal, we also offer regularly Eucharistic Celebrations with the Sacraments of Reconciliation and Anointing of the Sick, as well as Prayer Team ministry, in various Parishes in the Diocese.

Auxiliary Bishop Thomas Dowd and Father Michael McKenna are our OSL Chaplains.

Thanks be to God!
Prayerfully submitted, Penny Olive

The Order

"Is anyone among you suffering? Let him pray. Is anyone cheerful? Let him sing psalms. Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer of faith will save the sick, and the Lord will raise him up. And if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven."
James 5:13-15

Who we are
The International Order of St. Luke the Physician is made up of clergy, health professionals, and lay people who believe that healing is an essential part of the teaching and practice of our Lord Jesus Christ and that the healing ministry of Christ belongs in the Church today. It is an interdenominational Christian order of faith, prayer, and service. The order believes that God uses many avenues for healing - some spiritual and some medical - and that they should be supportive of one another.

What we believe
The revival of Christian healing in the Church today may be a means of the greatest advance of Christianity in this century.

God's healing power operates within the Church which is the Body of Christ on earth, through its membership.

Healing was an important part of Christ's ministry and is intended to be a part of His disciples' work in every generation.

God works through human channels to do His healing. We must make ourselves fit and willing channels.

God uses many agencies for healing. Some are spiritual, such as prayer, love, faith and laying on of hands. Some are medical, such as medicine, surgery, and psychology. These agencies should be supportive of one another.

God's desire for us is wholeness and health.

Christian healing is accomplished through faith in Christ and through one's subjecting one's entire life to the scrutiny and counsel of God.

Jesus Christ lives today, and He still possesses all power on earth as in Heaven.

The OSL Emblem
The emblem of The Order of St. Luke the Physician is a cross within a circle which together makes an acrostic. The motto is in Latin:

JESU ESTO MIHI JESUS DUX LUX REX LEX.

Roughly translated, this means,

"O Jesus, be to me my Saviour (Healer), my Leader, my Light, my King, and my Law!"

Prayer of the Order

Almighty God, who inspired
Your servant Luke the Physician to set
forth in the Gospel the love and
healing power of Your Son:
Graciously continue in Your Church
the love and power to heal, to the
praise and glory of Your Name,
through Jesus Christ, our Lord.
Amen.

Hymn of the Order

Breathe on Me, Breath of God
fill me with life anew
That I may love what Thou dost love,
And do what Thou wouldst do.

Breathe on me, Breath of God,
Until my heart is pure,
Until with Thee I will one will,
To do or to endure.

Breathe on me, Breath of God,
Till I am wholly Thine,
Till all this earthly part of me
Glows with Thy fire divine.

Breathe on me, Breath of God,
So shall I never die;
But live with Thee the perfect life
Of Thine eternity.

Word Received for the Order
kindly forwarded to me by the Rev. Donald E. Baustian,
our Past North American Warden
Our new North American Director is The Ven. Larry Mitchell, installed June 2004

"To those I have called to My healing ministry. Arise from your slumber. The church needs you as never before. Sickness abounds in my Body, sickness that is spreading like the plague. Not only are there sick and suffering ones in the church who have not had My healing love shared with them, but the Body itself is so wounded, so broken, the life is ebbing away. I have called you not only to the healing of individuals but to the healing and reconciliation of My Body. The healing ministry is one not only of praying for healing but it is also the ministry of Reconciliation. Much sickness has at its root unforgiveness, disobedience, pride, prejudice. These are all being manifested in those who are called by My name.

My sheep are wandering around, lost with no one to seek and find them and bring them to Me for many of My shepherds are also lost. To this ministry you have been called, to heal the sick, to cast out demons, to set the captives free, to bring about reconciliation through calling for and teaching about repentance and reconciliation. You are to share the love I give you with each other and with those who are members of the church in order that the church might be healed and they may reach out in love to one another and to the world.

I have given you gifts but you hide them as well as your light under a bed. You take the very light I have given you to take light and life to others and allow it to go out. In many cases you too are estranged from one another. I call you to repentance in order that reconciliation can take place. You must seek My face, walk in My ways, turn from your complacency and arise to be the prayer warriors I have called you to be. You did not choose Me, I chose you, and anointed you that you should go and bear fruit, fruit that will last. Turn away from anything that hinders you, even if it is your denomination's doctrines and tradition. My ways are not man's ways. You must believe that. Neither are My thoughts your thoughts. My ways are foolishness to those who are perishing but life to those who believe. Do not let the slumbering spirit of some of your churches lull you to sleep, to a sense of uselessness.

Where are the sick, the brokenhearted, the downcast that I have sent you to gather to Me? You must be using every defense I have given you to save My lost sheep. Put on the full armor of God and take your stand against all that threatens to destroy your brothers and sisters. Be constant in prayer, faithful warriors who can be a defense against the evil one who comes to kill and destroy. Remember, he comes as an angel of light with cunning plans and schemes that sound so attractive but are worthless for kingdom building. You are to proclaim to people that the kingdom is among them.

Forget yourselves, for I will care for you as you walk in unity, love and peace taking new life to the lost and suffering of My flock. You have supported one another long enough, arise and walk with Me for you are chosen instruments of My grace and My love. Yours is the ministry of Reconciliation. My ambassadors, the Father is making his appeal through you. All of creation waits to see the sons of God revealed. Cast off the old self and put on the new. Fear not for I am always with you. Cast off the works of darkness and put on the armor of light. Study My Word, know it, speak it to one another, keep it close to you. Take it into your hearts for it brings wholeness and healing to the body. Recall all that you have been taught, study what those who have gone before you have left you.

Remember that you are My hands and feet sent to a troubled church and world. Fear not, for I am with you as you walk among My people calling them to repentance and reconciliation, healing the sick, casting out demons, comforting and healing the brokenhearted, seeking the lost, and bringing all to Me. Go in My love, children, for love covers a multitude of sins. Let your light so shine before others that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven. You are never alone as long as you walk in My light. My peace I give to you. Go!"

L'Ordre de St-Luc le médecin (Canada)

Dear friends in Christ,

During the fall of 2003, I was led by the Lord to translate the Initial Study Project for Associate Members in the International Order of St. Luke the Physician, entitled, THE HEALING MINISTRY OF JESUS, into the French language.

Following the initial stage of this work, the Lord put before me a Christian woman, a dear friend in Christ, with whom I had done similar work in the past during my time with World Vision Canada in Quebec. Manon and I worked very hard together for a few months on this second stage of the work, proof-reading and editing what I had initially done on my own. She was a real blessing to me, gentle and kind, and a joy to work with.

We are now in the 3rd stage of this work, this time working with a husband-and-wife team who are doing a second proof-read for us. Nathalie and Olivier have quite a busy lifestyle, working full-time, and with two young children, and so we are praying for them as they embark with us on this very demanding and Spirit-led project.

Following this, the work will need to be finalized, and it is hoped that another former colleague of mine, Luc, will feel led to participate in the "quality control" end of things, so that we can finally get down to the work of putting together a mock-up "for the presses", so to speak. Manon will most probably work with us again during this final process. It will be like the old days!

We thank the Lord for the privilege of doing this work, and trust Him to put all in place.

After all, this is for His Holy people. Thanks be to God!

Faithfully in Christ, Penny

* Note: In the process of speaking with Nathalie and Olivier, I discerned that the demands on their time and energy had increased suddenly and significantly over the two past months since they had accepted to do this work of proof-reading for us. After praying about it, I felt led to relieve them of this task. I sought the Lord's direction in what to do next, and that same day, I received an email message from Manon, saying that as she was reading, it came to her mind that she would be ready to re-read the translation.

We are pleased to say that this work of proof-reading is now done. Once I type in our adjustments, the translation will be ready for Luc to examine, prayerfully in the next couple of weeks. Yashuv Yireh. The Lord Provides.

Further update:
Once these adjustments were done, I spoke to Luc. As it happened, the demands on his time were such that it was not possible for him to do this work for us. Manon and I prayerfully discussed this, and decided to pass the work on to another fellow Christian, Manon Desrochers. Through her, the Lord led us to Louise Trudeau Moquin, who gladly took on the task of doing yet another proofread for us. I have just now received the translation back into my hands, and a date has been set for Manon and I, July 7th, to review Louise's notes and suggestions. Once this is done, I will incorporate the changes into the good copy that I have, and a final proofread will be done by both Manon and myself.

We will be then ready to present the completed work to our Board of Directors for approval.

Thanks be to God for his indescribable gift! 2Corinthians 9:15

I praise and thank the Lord for the open hearts of these women: for their willingness, for their humbleness, for their obedience. Thanks be to God!

Who despises the day of small things? Zechariah 4:10a
Qui donc a méprisé le jour des petits commencements? Zacharie 4.10a

September 16th Update:

How wonderful is the Lord!

The lastest news is that we are on our absolutely last proofread, the formatting is done, and the funds are being put in place as we speak.

To date, we have received gifts of $50 and $300, a promise of $500US and $100 Canadian, and now a Grant of $2000, as well as a gift of envelopes. This will cover printing costs as well as our copyright fee for overseas distribution. Further gifts that come in will be used to cover our initial mailing costs, both here in Canada and overseas. As soon as all is in place, we will begin our promotion and distribution process. Thanks be to God!

We praise and thank the Lord for all that He is doing through the process of this French Translation, for hearts that have been opened, for hands that have been extended, for doors that have been unlocked. We ask even now in the Name of Jesus, for a special outpouring of His Holy Spirit on all francophone lay leaders, ministers, and students, in our worldwide community. May He prepare their hearts to step forth in faith to do this Bible study. May He provide for all that they need. And may they know to what they are called. In Jesus' Name, Amen.

And we here at The Montreal Chapter praise and thank the Lord for this call upon our lives. May He continue to work in us according to His Good and Holy Will.

If any of you who are reading this, feel called to help us with our initial mailing costs, please make your donations payable to The Order of St. Luke (Canada), and send them to:
The Order of St. Luke (Canada)
455 Church Street
Beaconsfield, Qc H9W3S6

I would like to share with you two Scriptures that have been speaking to me quite powerfully throughout the process of doing this work.

How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in?
And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard?
And how can they hear without someone preaching to them?
And how can they preach unless they are sent?
As it is written, "How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!"
Romans 10:14-15

And who knows but that you have come to royal position for such a time as this?
Esther 4:14b

And may you too, dear children of the King and fellow heirs with me, know to what you are called in these days.

In Jesus' Name, Amen.
Your servant, Penny

Later this same day...

Message of Thanksgiving...I have just now received a message from our North American Director, The Ven. Larry Mitchell, that the Saskatoon Chapter, upon hearing about this work of the Lord, has offered to contribute $500 towards the French bible study work.

I had been wondering last night about our budget for $850 for the French international copyright, and had prayerfully given this need into the Lord's hands. We had on hand $350. With this wonderful gift of $500, we now have the needed $850. I have just spoken to Rev. Mitchell, and we will be forwarding the fee of $500 EUROS, and the signed agreements, to France in the coming week.

The Lord provides. Yahweh Yireh. Hallelujah!

May the Lord bless abundantly the hearts and hands of all who responded in faith during this past year: Elisabeth De Cairos; Margaret Norman; The Rev. Donald Baustian and his wife Betty; the faithful members of our Saskatoon Chapter; the members of the Enabling of Ministries Grants Committee; Betty Bushell; and all you who raised your hands in prayer. We serve a Gracious God.
Thank you, Jesus. Amen

January 18, 2005
A new year begins...a new work begins!

My husband Jack and I picked up the completed workbooks last night and they are beautiful!

Thanksgiving to the Lord for His Faithfulness and for His Love for His people, for this work is for them. The French translation of the Initial Bible Study Project of the International Order of St. Luke the Physician is now available to the public.

In your presence is fullness of joy;
at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.
Psalm 16:11

In Christ, Penny

Update:
September 2008
I am happy to say that the first draft of the French translation of Handbook for all members of the Order of St. Luke the Physician is now ready for proofreading. Manon Dumouchel has once again graciously accepted to work with me on this. Thanks be to God!

It is my hope and prayer that once this work is complete, I can then begin the work of translating the bylaws of the Order, so that one day we can truly offer the ministry of the Order of St. Luke in all its fullness to our francophone brothers and sisters. To the Glory of the Lord, all in His Own Good Time, and according to His Will and Might.

Thanks be to God! Alleluia! Alleluia!
