I believe that God wants a personal relationship, an adult friendship, with each of us and that prayer is the best way of engaging in that friendship. By prayer I mean what occurs when I am conscious in some way of God’s presence. So prayer can be as simple as watching a child trying to speak words, looking at sunlight glancing, off snow-covered trees, playing with young dogs, feeling the wind on your face, hearing the birds sing, smelling bacon sizzling in a frying pan, looking at someone you love; all can be prayer if you’re aware of God’s presence as you take in these experiences.
Here I want to mention some recent experiences that have inspired me to write about this topic. For Lent of 2012 I decided to ask God every day “What do you want for our friendship?” Almost as soon as I began to focus on this question, I felt God’s love for me, and then experienced some tangible examples for that love both in prayer and daily life. I took these experiences as God’s response. Then my prayer took its usual route of distractions about worries or things to do; when I noticed this and turned back to God, I said something like this, “There I go again” God seemed to reply, “Why don’t you talk to me about these distractions.” When I did I noticed how the concerns evaporated; moreover, I often knew how to approach in a more positive and less self-absorbed way, what I was going to do or the people I was concerned about. When I began to talk to God about my distractions, they were no longer distractions; they became openings to dialogue and greater transparency with God.
A woman whom I see for spiritual direction told me about her frustrations with a work situation. I asked her if she had spoken to God about these frustrations. She said she had, but it hadn’t helped; she just got more frustrated and angry. I asked her how God responded to her frustrations. She answered. “I know that he listens and that he will be present.” I said, “I didn’t ask what you think, but how God responded,” She pondered and realize that she didn’t know for sure; she presumed God’s response, again I noted that we were not talking about her presumptions, but about God’s actual response. As our conversation continued, she became aware of the difference between dialogue and monologue and of how much better she felt when she spoke the truth to someone, including God, and felt heard, even if there were no immediate solutions to her worries and concerns.
A rather scrupulous man in spiritual direction continually brought up his concerns about others’ anger or possible anger at him. He often went to great lengths to avoid people who might get angry with him. Prayer was often a time to mull over these situations and people and to ask God to help him cope with them. Finally one day it seemed to click that he could just tell God how he felt about these people and situations and see how God responded. At that point he told me that he felt at home with an imagined scene of Jesus with Martha and Mary and that he could tell them more of the truth of what he was experiencing. There were tears of relief in his eyes.
These experiences catalyzed some ideas that had been percolating for a few years about the psalms as prayer and about how we grow in friendship. I had thought of writing a book using the psalms, or selected psalms, as examples of transparency, or truth telling, before God. The psalmists”let it all hang out” in prayer. They often speak the unspeakable to God, and yet throughout the centuries the Book of Psalms has been considered a model for prayer –a model not often followed in practice.
So I intend to engage in a conversation with you about what it might mean for your prayer life to engage in a friendship with God, a friendship God wants very much. To grow in that friendship, you and God will have to tell the truth to each other. In the process, I believe, you will find yourself slowly transformed.
When you have unpleasant situations to meet you may feel afraid.
God Is With You
You can choose to meet what you have to meet with faith, knowing that God is with you.
Do you need Me? I am there. You cannot see me yet I am the light you see by
You cannot hear me, yet I speak through your voice.
You cannot feel me, yet I am the power at work in your hands
I am at work, though you do not understand my ways.
I am at work, though you do not recognize my work.
Yet I am there. Yet I hear. Yet I answer
When you need Me, I am there.
Even if you deny me I am there.
Even when you feel most alone, I am there.
Even in your fears, I am there
Even in your pain, I am there
I am there when you pray
And when you do not pray
I am in you, and you are in me
A Tribute to Rene Brimo
We were saddened by the news of the passing of Rene Brimo who was called home from his earthly journey on April 11, 2013. Rene was the past President and a Pioneer of CCSM for many years; he was very active in many of the organizations relating to the Charismatic Renewal and was instrumental in the design of the cross of the Renewal which is now being used all over the world. Rene left an indelible footprint and impression on the hearts of everyone whom he met on his life’s journey. Rene will greatly be missed by his many friends and especially his wife Helen and his family. May his soul and all the faithful departed rest in the presence of God’s perfect peace. Submitted by Kathy Dennis.
Rene was a very special man, ONE OF A KIND you rarely saw him without a smile and when he sang and played his guitar “praising the Lord” his face was transformed to that of a little boy –giving honor to God with his heart. Rene was never too tired to come to the Prayer Group – although he could have just arrive from the airport he would rest later, but was always ready to praise God, fulfill his responsibility and share his wisdom with us. One of his favorite phrases was “COME AND SEE”. Rene will always be a blessed example to us all. He is greatly missed but, his teaching; wisdom and open heartedness will always be with us along with his eternal spirit interceding for us all, my deepest condolences to Helen and Family. – We are there for you and just a phone call away. God bless you and yours Amen. Submitted by Victoria Milewski.
We will miss Rene in many many ways, but one way that stands out for me was his great optimism in his many endeavors for us. Failure was never part of his his vocabulary. How suitable for a faithful leader. Submitted by Sheila Moriarty.
Man of the world, dreamer of dreams, lover of life, I loved his welcoming smile how he would look at us with pride, how he sometimes looked, like the cat that had swallowed the canary. What an example of a great man of faith, of generosity…. Committed and loyal to the end. Submitted by Julie Lafera.
While in Rome it is with much sadness that Dora and I came to know the death of our dear friend Rene. I have known Rene and Helen from 1993 when I joined the Renewal Movement. He was my leader, friend and adviser. He taught me about the Renewal and we have worked together to organize so many conferences, workshops and leaderships programs in Montreal and in other parts of the country. He always came up with ideas so that CCSM would take deep roots in Montreal. It is now our duty to continue on the path in the midst of all obstacles. Let us call upon him to guide us from heaven. Helen, you can be assured that our dear Rene will continue to take care of you from above, as surely as he did when he was here. May our loving God grant him a special place in Paradise? Submitted by Bernie Ratneiya.
Upon hearing the news of Rene Brimo’s passing the first thought that came to mind was “Oh no there is going to be a huge hole in all our lives” who will we turn to for Spiritual advice A great disciple of the Lord. He was a visionary, a Spiritual leader, a man of faith; saw every opportunity that could be turned to positive to bring God’s Glory. He evangelized by word and deeds. He was loved by all of us at CCSM. But our loss cannot be compared to Helen and his family. Helen we keep you also in our prayers and thank you for sharing Rene with all of us. -- Submitted by Lorraine Pecus.
Tribute to Rene Brimo - Continued
No man ever dies as long as there is someone left to remember them
Having known Rene for close to 20 years, there were many occasions when we came together in small groups, big events or phone calls. So, in many ways I consider myself blessed to have been able to grow in my knowledge of God, in part because of his encouragement and his example. He was a great man and a great Spiritual friend. He had perseverance and understanding in his eyes, we were all gifted and he would trust us many, many times to be part of different events, we would gain confidence, gain maturity in our faith and increase our ability to use the gifts received from the Holy Spirit. I will miss you, dear friend, but trust that you will continue to watch over us as we continue our journey down here. God Bless! Submitted by Aline McLaughlin.
Rene was my brother/Spiritual Father/Mentor/Kindred spirit all wrapped up into one. For sure the last 20 years without Rene in my life would have been very different. He was always cheerfully optimistic and he encouraged me to spread my wings. I could write pages about all of the amazing experiences we shared, but it is enough to say that - Rene was a true and genuine friend I will miss his smile, warm welcome and generosity, but most of all I will miss his joyful spirit. Thank you Rene – may you enjoy your eternal reward for all you have done to keep the Flame burning. Submitted by Jean Ronci.
My first few years with the Catholic Charismatic Services of Montreal, CCSM were significantly inspired by the “utmost sincere dedication” of ONE MAN, Rene Brimo to the organization. Thanks Rene. Submitted by Almario Bamba.
I have known Rene over 23years. During this time, his compassion teaching, enthusiasm humor, encouragement touched my life in many ways. Rest in peace Rene my brother in Christ. Submitted by Diane Messereau.
I had been out of town and was quite shocked to learn on my return that Rene had been called home to the Lord. I came to the Charismatic renewal in 1995 at which time Rene held the CCSM chairmanship, as I do now. I got to know him very well and admired him tremendously, particularly his energy and the enthusiasm he displayed in arranging, big worthwhile and highly interesting projects which would be of benefit to all. Rene accomplished much with total optimism and complete trust in Divine Providence. I will miss his encouragement, his good humor and his assistance….but above all I will miss his friendship! Submitted by Hal Horwood.
Rene meant a lot to many many people; quite a few of us remember him from our 1st Life in the Spirit Seminar, others for the Retreat. Last night a fairly new member of our group remember him from that teaching last year in Pointe Claire (I think it was at St. Veronica’s) but I’m not sure, I’m pretty sure our Lord said to him ‘well done, Faithful servant’ He’s touched so many of us. May he rest in peace. Submitted by Linda Piper.
